UNIT 6 LESSON 2

USING 'DO' FOR EMPHASIS

You can add emphasis to a statement by using do before the verb. This creates a contrast with the meaning of the previous statement.

A: Should I get a gun?
B: No, but you do need to protect yourself.
A: Why didn't you call me last week?
B: I did call you, and I left a message.
A: I never get sick.
B: But suppose you did get sick?

Notice here how the second speaker uses do to signal surprise:

A: Sometimes I wish I were a cop.
B: You do?

RESPONDING TO UNWANTED ADVICE

When people give you unwanted advice, try to respond politely. Use expressions like these to acknowledge their concern.

A: There's some weird stranger in your hallway. You need to be careful around here.
B: I'll keep that in mind. Try not to worry.
A: More coffee? You should drink tea. It's better for you.
B: I appreciate your concern, but I enjoy coffee.
A: Crime is increasing in your neighborhood. This isn't a good place to live.
B: I hear what you're saying, but I can make up my own mind about my neighborhood.
