  • If you are apathetic, you are not willing to make an effort to change things:  my parents are completely apathetic about environmental problems.

  • If you are indifferent to something, you have no feelings about it:  Alan was crazy about Cathy, but she was indifferent to him.

  • Uninterested is not interested: I`m completely uninterested in baseball I think it`s boring.

  • Disinterested is not the same as uninterested. It means not influenced by personal reasons: we need a disinterested person to decide what is fair.

  • An obligation is a legal or moral requirement: Teachers have an obligation to treat all their students fair.

  • A responsibility means the state of being in charge of something: Janet will have responsibility for the next advertising campaign.

  • Duties (usually plural) are parts of a job: My duties include feeding and taking care of the zoo animals.

  • A requirement is something that is essential or needed:  the requirements for that job are a master`s degree and five years` experience.





Watch Out!  Negative  Prefixes.


The prefixes a, - un, -in,- il,- im,- used with adjectives all have the meaning ``not`` or ``without``. However, you have to learn which prefix goes with which adjective.

  • A theory is a possible explanation for something that has reasons behind it:  Scientists have a theory that the dinosaurs disappeared because of climate change.

  • A guess is an attempt to say what is true or what will happen without knowing exactly: My guess is that many people will be absent from class tomorrow.

  • If you have a hunch about something, you have a feeling or intuition about it: I have a hunch you`ll find your missing wallet at home.

  • If you search for something, you look for it very systematically and carefull:  An airplan searched for any sign of the missing boat.

  • Look of is a more general term: Im looking for Anne /my keys / a better job.

  • Hunt for is informal and means look around in a large area: The kids hunted for shells on the beach.





Watch Out! Adopt and Adapt.


Don't confuse these two very similar verbs. 

  • Adopt means to take legal responsibility for a child: Mr. and Mrs. Lee adopted a little girl.

  • Adapt means to change something to make it suitable: the movie was adapted for a TV series.

In Other Words.


  • Company is a general term for a business organization that makes or sells things: Sony is a Japanese company.

  • A Business can be large or small: My sister has her own business - she's a hairdresser.

  • A Firm is a business of professionals: Claudia works a big accounting firm.

  • A Corporation is a large business with special legal status:  I have fifty shares of stock in that corporation. 

  • To Succeed means to achieve your goals: Her ambition was to become a pilot and she succeed. 

  • Make it is an informal expression for succeed in a profession: It's really hard to make it as a new actor in Hollywood.

  • If you are doing well, you are successful in work or education:

  • My brother's company is doing very well. / My son is studying at Oxford University, and he's doing very well.

  • If you Thrive on something, it motivates or energizes you to succeed: Athletes Thrive on competition.






WATCH OUT! 


Staff is a collective noun  (similar to team, faculty or family) It refers to the whole group of workers and is uncountable. To refer to one person, use Staff member.
