UNIT 5 LESSON 1

UNDERSTANDING WARNINGS

It's important to understand the difference between a watch and a warning. For certain natural disasters, a watch means that something might be about to happen, and you should get ready to take action. A warning, however, means that something is certain to happen or already happening, and you need to take action immediately.

There's a tornado watch. We need to be ready, just in case.
There's a tornado warning. Take cover in the basement! Hurry!

When a condition becomes more serious, it is upgraded. When it becomes less serious, it is downgraded. Note the frequent use of passive tense in warnings.

The storm system was upgraded to a cyclone at 5 o'clock this morning.
This just in: The hurricane warning has been downgraded to a hurricane watch.

One thing that experts will tell you is:

Don't panic. Try to remain calm.
