More Features Of Spoken English. 

In the movie about skydiving, pay close attention to these features of spoken English:


FILLERS

There are many different kinds of fillers in spoken English, such as I mean, kind of and like. These fillers have a variety of purposes. They give the speaker time to think. They sometimes emphasize points. They may signal that the speaker is going to continue speaking.

I mean, I have to admit it, it freaked me out. 
I kind of just, like, risked my life.



FEATURES OF SPOKEN ENGLISH. 

Shortened Questions And Statements 

You will notice questions and statements even just one word. This is possible because the speakers understand the context in which the sentences are said. 

A: How was your first live skydiving? 
B: Oh. Scary



INFORMAL WORDS 

Spoken English has many informal words like huh, uh, and yeah.

A. Beautiful day today huh? 
B: uh, yeah, it's really nice out.

"Go" And "Book" 

In informal English, the verb ge sometimes. to say. 

And I'm going to go, like, "Ok are you ready.

Use the verb look to emphasize what you are saying. 

Uh... look, this is dangerous.


YES

There are many different ways to say yes, like yeah uh-huh, ok, right, all right, exactly and sure.

A: You ready 
B. Uh, sure.


REPETITION FOR EMPHASIS

In informal conversation, speakers often add emphasis by repeating words or phrases. 

But I just never was a thrill-seeker, never was.
Speechless. I'm speechless. 


FALSE STARTS 

A speakers will sometimes start a sentence, then stop, then restart the sentence in a new way. This is a reflection of how the speaker's thought process is developing.

You don't even feel like you're falling, you're just... you're feeling invincible. 
You just, you feel like you're a kid again.


REPETITION TO GET TIME TO THINK. 

Sometimes a speaker will repeal words to get time to think. 

I'm, I'm, I'm never going to do anything like that again.
By the way, it was, it was amazing.


DESCRIBING A DANGEROUS EXPERIENCE.

Start With Something Dramatic.

Begin your account with something that will capture your listener's attention - something dramatic, or even exaggerated. 
Use a superlative to emphasize the drama. 

It was the most Cerrifying experience of my life.
It was the craziest thing.
I've never felt so free, so at peace. I've ever done.

DESCRIBE IN DETAIL HOW YOU FELT. 

Give details about your physical or emotional feelings.

I almost passed out. 
I could feel the thud of my heartbeat.
I felt safer in the air.
I felt like a kid agai

Use Emotive Expressions 

Don't be afraid to use expressions that affect your listever's feelings.

I was shaking in my shoes. 
I saw my life flash before my eyes.


CONCLUDE SUCCINCTLY

To conclude, describe how you feel about the event now.

It was an amazing experience.
It was the best thing I've ever done.
It was terrifying. I don't think I'll go skydiving again.
