DEALING WITH A MISUNDERSTANDING.
Use expressions like these if you don't completely understand someone's point of view. Questions are usually a bit more polite; statements are usually more direct.
Are you saying that women talk too much?
So, you're saying that men shouldn't enjoy cooking.
When someone inaccurately represents your point of view, use expressions like there to clarify:
- Sorry, but I think there may have been a misunderstanding.
- Sorry, that's not what I meant. I meant that wonen, tend to be more social
- No, I'm not saying that at all. The fact is, I think it's grea that you enjoy cooking.
When someone accurately represents your perspective, use expressions like these to confirm:
Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. men are usu -ally very quiet.
EXPRESSING DIFFERENCES
Use expressions like the following to identify differences:
A: When it comes to communication, there are some striking differences between men and women.
B: I agree. The differences between wren and women are obvious.
Use contrast connectors like but and whereas to contrast two things!
A : women usually speak more in private, whereas men tend to speak more in public.
B: yeah. men are comfortable speaking out in public but women prefer talking more privately. you got it. I think women are better cocks.
UNDERSTANDING SASCASUE.
Sarcasm is when you say something, but you mean the opposite. Use it to emphasize a point, but use it carefully - sometimes people might not understand you're being sarcastic; sometimes, they may offended by it. Whether or not you use sarcasm, it's important to be able to recognize it when you hear it.
Listen to the following examples of sarcasm.. Notice the tone of the speakers' voices and their word stress. Notice, also, that they weave the exact opposite of what they say.
You don't like cooking? Really? I thought all men loved cooking.
Talk too much? Darling! I don't think you a enough. falk
Sometimes, you may not be sarcastic. If you know the person well, you may want to ask:
Sorry, but are you being sarcastic? You got it. I think wonen are better cooks.
No, I'm not saying that at all. The fact is, I think it's great that you enjoy cooking.
